New software for farmers on trial


A senior technocrat and software engineer have come up with unique software that aims at supporting online agriculture extension services in the State.
Named as Bharat Leaf application software, it facilitates bringing together the farmers and government agencies engaged in promotion of agriculture and allied fields. Speaking to The Hindu , one of the pioneers K Narender, a senior technocrat said that the software supports sending messages in local language with audio or photo or even video attachment.
It works with smart phone, tablet, personal computer, laptop having 2G and 3G internet connectivity.
Unique features
Explaining the unique features of the software, he said the Web-based Kisan Call Centre handles farmers queries and sends replies. It has messaging service functionality which helps farmer-related departments to send messages to farmers and monitoring government schemes up to mandal-level and monitoring university extension services.
The software was demonstrated for the benefit of the senior officers of the Telangana State government who have agreed to adopt it on an experimental basis.
Mr Narender said the government had issued orders to departments to provide them with data to feed into the software. Senior agricultural scientist R Uma Reddy who was associated with the software development said the usage of smart phones increased in rural areas and many farmers were familiar with the technology. “
