Kerala’s own jackfruit is beneficial to our health and it’s high time we included this in our diet, said Agriculture Minister, K.P. Mohanan.
The Minister was inaugurating the jackfruit processing unit and incubation centre at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra at Thelliyoor near Tiruvalla on Monday.
He said the scope for value addition was immense and Kerala should tap the market potential of the fruit in India and abroad.
Delivering the keynote address, Shree Padre, editor of the Kannada agricultural magazine, Adike Patrika , said Kerala was blessed with a natural wealth of jackfruit trees.
Technology products
Chairman of the Plantation Corporation Kerala Limited, Varghese George, released the technology products under the brand names, Eudora12 and Pollux7, developed by the KVK from jackfruit on the occasion.
Issac Mar Philexinos Episcopa, chairman of Christian Agency for Rural Development, presided over the function.
Raju Abraham, MLA; C.P. Robert, KVK programme co-ordinator; Saji Chacko, District Panchayat member; P.V. Balachandran of Kerala Agricultural University, and C.V. Sairam, scientist attached to Bharatiya Agriculture Research Council, also spoke.
Financial assistance
The Rs 52.5 lakh centre has been set up with financial assistance from the State Agriculture Department.
The processing centre has got facility for grading of jackfruit, categorisation, processing, preparation of various value-added products, drying yard, waste treatment mechanism, exhibition of various products, etc, the Minister said.
