How digestion will help you burn calories!

How digestion will help you burn calories!

Forget running on the treadmill, digestion is a calorie-burning activity on its own.

Consider this - for every calorie you ingest, your body uses some of the same calories to burn what you are eating. It's like shopping and getting a partial refund the second you swipe your card! The question is, how do you make this wonderful feature of your body work for you.

This is the essential principle behind the practice of frequent meals at shorter intervals, which enables your body to boost your metabolism. When you constantly give your body fuel, you are tickling it to keep working. This is called the thermogenic effect of food. It's not only an incredibly smart way of losing weight, it also helps you increase your BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate).

I like to call this the Internal Workout, because by constantly making it work to digest food, you are giving your body a workout. And while you may not be able to see the furious digestive activity going on in your body at any point, trust me, your body is working quite hard.

Negative calorie foods
Foods that contain a negligible amount of calories, like celery and other non-starchy vegetables and fruits, still require energy to be digested. Since the calories in these food are low, and your body is working overtime to digest it, these foods can theoretically be called negative-calorie foods. But let me say it out loud - there are no reputable scientific studies to prove it yet.

The idea of creating an only 'negative-calorie' food diet is misleading and potentially damaging. Focusing solely on these foods may put one at risk of fat- and-protein-deficiency - which are essential for your body.

However, using these foods as frequent fillers can help aid the weight-loss process. Consuming these foods as part of frequent small meals will not add substantial calories and the digestion process, since you are having small meals at regular intervals, will be on an active mode.

Most of these foods have high water and antioxidant content and a low glycemic index, thus making them ideal friends to help you lose weight.

List of negative calorie foods:
Vegetables: Cucumber, asparagus, tomatoes, spinach, lettuce, kale, broccoli, mushrooms, bell peppers.
Fruits: Apples, grapefruit, papaya, berries, tangerines, lemons
