Head to this fruit mela tomorrow

HOPCOMS (Horticultural Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society Ltd.) will organise a ‘Grape and Watermelon Mela 2016’ at its outlets here for three days from Wednesday.
There will also be a rare fruits mela with dragon fruit, blueberries, raspberries, litchis, pears, and passion fruit on display and for sale at Lalbagh. Over 10 varieties of grapes, including Thompson seedless, Sonaka and Sharad, and two varieties of watermelon – Namdhari and Kiran – will be sold for 10 per cent discount at HOPCOMS outlets for two months.
Free training
Experts from Horticultural Department Training Centre will conduct a free training programme for the public on how to make jams, jelly and juice and cultivate mushrooms at Lalbagh on all days from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m.
HOPCOMS president G.R. Srinivasan said that it has been organising fruit melas to encourage farmers by providing better marketing facilities so that the supply reaches consumers directly.
“Fruits will be purchased directly from farmers of Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Koppal, Gadag, Belagavi, Kolar, Chickaballapur and Bengaluru rural district, paying them remunerative prices on the spot,” he said.
Managing director Belluru Krishna said the company targets to sell over 1,000 tonnes of grapes and 1,200 tonnes of watermelon. During the last mela, 316 tonnes of grapes and 967 tonnes of watermelon were sold, he said.
Horticulture Minister Shamanur Shivashankarappa will inaugurate the mela, and Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy will inaugurate the rare fruits mela.
