5 ways to sharpen memory

Strong aromas
Discover new aromas. When you wake up in the morning, try to inhale something with a strong aroma, like coffee powder or rosemary herb. Scientists conclude that aromas profoundly affect people's cognitive abilities. The stronger your sense of smell, the sharper your memory.

A diet for memory
Scientists recommend eating foods that are high in antioxidants (blueberries, apples, bananas, dark green vegetables, garlic, carrots), as they neutralise electrons, or free radicals, that weaken the memory. The brain also benefits from healthy fats, like Omega-3 fatty acid, found in fish and nuts.

Brain workouts

Make your brain sweat (think)! Games like Sudoku and crossword puzzles challenge your recall powers and test your memory. You can play chess, scrabble or learn a new language to challenge the brain. Avoid monotony. Take a new route to work or brush your teeth with the opposite hand. In short, do the unpredictable.

Sleep over it

Brain power gets restored with a good night's sleep. The process is believed to consolidate memories. According to scientists, skipping a night's sleep will cause your new memory files to get mixed up or lost.

Past, present and forward
Try to quiz yourself about dates and events in your life and repeat things you want to remember. The brain benefits from this exercise, and it slows agiing. Simplify the brain's activities. Don't do too many things at once.
